Laminar 2 concept builds upon the adjustable aerodynamics of its predecessor

A couple of weeks back, we had a look at the Laminar concept, and designer Daniel Fitzgerald has now created an updated version of the said concept in the form of the Laminar 2. Like its predecessor, the Laminar 2 is created for an urban family of three, for the year 2020, and it retains the impressive adjustable aerodynamics of the previous version. The new design however, has a number of goodies to show, and there’s a definite improvement in design with the concept getting more “mature.”

Designed to be minimalistic and more realistic, the Laminar 2 replaces the hub-less orbital front wheels of the Laminar with conventional wheels, and other similar changes that make the design more realistic, safer and more aesthetically appealing. Daniel has superimposed the renderings over the Albert Park Grand Prix track at Melbourne, Australia for a better look and feel of the concept in its intended habitat. We guess no one can do a better job at explaining the improvements than Daniel himself, so here’s the text from the designer:

The basic idea behind Laminar 2’s concept is as an update of the original Laminar concept based on feedback and observations. Most of these refinements are based on developing this concept as a more practically considered, and justifiable concept over the original.
The basic refinements are:
- Electroluminescent hubcaps for night visibility:
Laminar 2’s hubcaps have two electroluminescent rings. The outer ring illuminates to provide greater visibility to other cars at night, while the inner ring serves as an indicator.
- Front wheel fender for pedestrian safety:
The original Laminar concept has its front wheels exposed, providing a hazard to pedestrians. With the Laminar 2 concept, front wheel fenders are now in place, protecting pedestrians in the event of an accident.
- Suspension, headlight and front wing assembly reduced in complexity:
The hub-less orbital front wheels of the the original Laminar concept have been replaced by a conventional stock wheel as it was more realistic. The front headlights are no longer attached to the adjustable wing, avoiding a lot of mechanical complexity with maintaining a level light-beam on an adjustable wing. Also the front wing is now integrated into the front fender bodywork, this provides better support and is more simplistic mechanically.
- Design aesthetics revamped:
The original design was for a Peugeot Competition and was styled accordingly. The Laminar 2 was styled more for a minimalist effect, with the intention of providing styling that wont easily date.
- Suicide door configuration more practical than existing scissor doors:
The scissor door configuration on the original Laminar concept would be too impractical for manufacture, and seemed inconvenient for everyday use. Suicide doors were a more sensible option for both usability and manufacture.
- Enhanced side door touch panel with inbuilt screen interactivity:
The original side touch panels have been incorporated with interactive screens, providing dashboard controls for air-con, radio and electric windows. In addition the drivers dashboard screen provides a combined rear view panoramic, replacing the traditional rear view and side mirrors. (still working on a computer render for this, let me know when you need for this article)
- Basic dimensions such as wheel diameter are more realistic.
Wheels are of a standard wheel size, not the huge diameter of the original.
