For a while now, Yahoo have been living in the past. Their mail service has been outdone by the likes of Google and Microsoft with both competitors having rolled out new designs. For Yahoo, they’ve had the same design for five years which may have caused some of their 279 million users to switch.

Yahoo have now addressed the problem of their competitors taking an advantages and came to the conclusion that they would roll out a new design along with a bunch of modern new features. The new service is said to be twice as fast as Gmail and Hotmail and is going to see social media compatibility. Additionally there will be improved spam filtering, tools such as priority inbox and inevitably updated texting and sending of instant messages.

Dave McDowell, Yahoo Mail senior product manager told the BBC that "People spend more than 300 billion minutes a month on Yahoo Mail. It is a critically important product to our users and this represents [the] most significant upgrade to Yahoo mail in five years.”

Greg Sterling, an Industry analyst believes that “if Yahoo Mail performs well, they will win people over. Yahoo Mail is a critical product for the company with an enormous user base. The challenge for them is to make having a Yahoo Mail address cool.”

Yahoo has been going through a hard time recently with even rumours of being bought by AOL, although they are still in talks which could takes months before a final decision is made.
