Seagate just took a small step forward in the never-ending quest for smaller portable storage devices. The company was able to slim their GoFlex 2.5-inch external hard drive down 38%, putting it at just 9mm thick. With flash storage becoming more and more prevalent this might not seem like a big deal but it’s an impressive feat for a mechanical disk, assuming that the drive is properly protected in its brushed aluminum enclosure. We should keep in mind that this drive packs in 320GB and USB 3.0 connectivity, so it’s not lacking in features despite the size. And no matter how expensive it is, the GoFlex will be affordable compared to a flash drive with the same capacity.
Above you can see it next to an iPhone 4 which, at 9.3mm, is actually thicker than the GoFlex hard drive. Below is the drive with the GoFlex accessory connection and the USB 3.0 cord.
The GoFlex drive will be available in Spring 2011. No price has been announced.
