Japan’s tech industry might be in a holding pattern at the moment waiting for the recent earthquake, tsunami, and now nuclear reactor problem to be resolved, but that hasn’t stopped manufacturers in China showing off their latest tech at FPD China 2011.
One of those manufacturers is Samsung, and it has unveiled a laptop with a transparent display. The 14.1″ screen is clear allowing a user to see what’s behind the display when it is turned off. When turned on, four LEDs act as a backlight and allow the 1,680 x 1,080 resolution display to work as normal, but you can still see through the screen.

While we can’t think of a scenario where a transparent screen on a laptop would be useful, Samsung has also demonstrated the same tech working in large LCD TVs. Both 22″ and 46″ transparent TVs were on display during the show. Unlike with a portable laptop, a clear TV allows for more placement options e.g. in front of a window, or for artwork to be positioned behind it that is seen when the TV is turned off.
Samsung is aiming to use a transparent display in a commercial product as early as July this year, but as of yet it has not decided what specific product that will be.
