With Netflix streaming now accounting for 20% of peak downstream traffic in the United States, the famous video rental service is starting to see the end-of-life for the venerable DVD fast approaching. As such, Netflix has already taken steps to downplay the DVD delivery aspect of their service — namely in finally offering customers a streaming-only subscription plan — but now they are taking another one.
In an attempt to “concentrate on offering you the titles that are available to watch instantly,” Netflix is planning on removing the “Add to DVD Queue” option from all streaming devices, including the Boxee Box, the Roku boxes and the Logitech Revue. Indeed, I can confirm the option’s already missing from the Roku Box. If you try to search for a movie that is not available for instant streaming, you simply aren’t given a search result anymore.
Don’t fret, DVD fans. If you log into Netflix on a computer, you’ll still have the option to save movies to your DVD queue. Even so, I’m sort of disappointed by the move: yes, it makes sense in streamlining the service, but it would be nice, when searching for something to see if it’s available for instant streaming, to at least be able to add it to your DVD queue in case your search falls up short.
