For all you Android phone users waiting for a Netflix app, we have some good news and some bad news. First, the good news. The APK file for the Netflix app leaked onto the Internet last night. The bad news is that it doesn’t really work.
Some very resourceful people managed to get a full dump on the LG Revolution, a device that isn’t even available yet. The LG Revolution is the only Android phone with the Netflix app on it, so with the system dump floating around the blogosphere, the hackers have ripped it for all to share.
Back to the bad news. The app only allows you to add videos and manage your queue, which isn’t very exciting, since there were other non-Netflix-branded apps out there that could do that before, like Movies by Flixter Inc, or QueueMan for Netflix by Eddie Webb.
Android users were hoping for an app that would allow them to stream content. When you try to press “Play” in the app, it switches to landscape mode, returns to the main screen, and then informs you that it “could not reach the Netflix service.” Alas, the wait for a functional Netflix Android app goes on.
Droid Life, which has the link to the APK, thinks all it takes is the Netflix team to flip a switch on their end. But other sites, like Engadget, think there’s something between Qualcomm and Netflix. Rumor has it the two companies got together for the DRM/Security setup. That means the app would require specific hardware in the phone’s chipset, and it would only work on devices Netflix intended it to work on.
You’ll need Android version 2.2 or higher to run the app. Let us know if you download the APK and try out the Netflix app.
