We are all used to concept of upgrading software by buying a code, it’s the way Microsoft operate when you want to upgrade Windows 7. However, Intel has decided to start experimenting with offering the same upgrade procedure for your processor.
So, for example, you could purchase a cheap PC with an Intel processor in it as a pre-built machine $300. But then a card will be available to buy in-store that unlocks the following features on that machine’s processor for $50:
- 4-way multitasking (instead of 2-way)
- Larger amount of cache made available (e.g. 512kb-1MB upgrade)
By doing this Intel still allows retailers to offer PCs at a low price, but then benefits from additional revenue after sale if a user decides to upgrade.
The number of processors this upgrade will be available for is unknown, but will be limited. The first seems to be the Pentium G6951.
