Huawei’s Chairman of devices, Richard Yu, popped into a Huawei store in Guangzhou, China recently and showed off the Ascend Mate, a 6.1-inch smartphone with a 1080p resolution display, according to a report by Engadget. The handset is expected to make its official debut at the Consumer Electronics Show 2013.

It is rumoured that the Huawei Ascend Mate features a 1.8GHz quad-core HiSilicon K3V3 processor. Engadget notes that this 1080p display features a pixel density of 361ppi. Wu stated that this handset features a LTPS type display, which may mean that it has a low temperature polysilicon. It is also known that the handset will include a 4000mAh battery, 2GB RAM and will be 9.9mm thick.

The huge Ascend Mate shown off

Earlier this month, Huawei Vice President Yu Chengdong confirmed that the company plans to launch a smartphone that will compete directly against the Galaxy Note II. The Huawei executive claimed that the handset will be more powerful than the Galaxy Note II, will feature a cooler design, slimmer bezel, better grip, a more stunning display and will also have longer battery life. Chengdong went on to add that those interested in buying a larger smartphone should wait for the offering from Huawei as it is supposedly better and less expensive.

From the looks of it, handsets these days are getting a lot bigger and the line between smaller 7-inch tablets and large smartphones is growing increasingly finer.

This is not the first large handset from Huawei. In October, Huawei announced the Ascend D2 a quad-core handset with a large 5-inch display. The handset will compete with the likes of Samsung Galaxy Note, Note II and the LG Optimus Vu, which are all currently available in the market.

The Ascend D2 features a 5-inch display with full HD resolution and a 1.5GHz quad-core processor. It sports a 13 megapixel rear camera, while the 1.3 megapixel camera found in the front can be used for video calling. The handset features a 3,000mAh battery that should keep it running for a significant amount of time. It is loaded with Android v4.1 Jelly Bean.

The Ascend D2 made an appearance on GLBenchmark in late November this year, which revealed that the handset runs on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean out of the box. The benchmark's System tab revealed that the handset will feature a 1.5GHz quad-core processor and a 5-inch screen with a resolution of 1800x1080 with navigation buttons. The actual resolution of the device is 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Huawei is expected to showcase the Ascend Mate, the Ascend D2 and the Windows Phone 8 handset Ascend W1 at the Consumer Electronics Show 2013.
