Freecom is a company that likes to break records and set world firsts, especially when it comes to portable storage solutions. In 2008 Freecom shipped the world’s smallest 2.5″ external drive, then in 2009 we got the world’s smallest 3.5″ external drive. The company finished off the year by shipping the world’s first external USB 3.0 drive.
2010 has been a comparatively quiet year for Freecom, but we’re not even halfway through January of 2011 and there’s another world first announcement to make: The Mobile Drive Mg is the world’s thinnest mobile hard drive.
It’s designed for the Mac market, and manages to squeeze 320GB of storage into a drive only 10mm thick. The good news doesn’t stop there though, as Freecom decided to include a USB 3.0 connection allowing data transfer speeds of up to 130MB/s/.
Such a thin drive needs protection which is catered for by the magnesium enclosure styled in white with a silver band to make it look right sitting next to any piece of the Mac hardware.
If you need more storage then the Mobile Drive Mg does have a 750GB option. It is thicker at 15mm to accommodate the additional storage, but does come with an optional FireWire800 port next to the USB 3.0 port if you require it. There’s also a 750GB model without FireWire.
The Mobile Drive Mg 320GB model costs $89.99. The 750GB model is $129.99, and the 750GB model with FireWire800 costs the most at $169.99. All 3 drives come with a 2-year warranty amd are available from the Freecom website, but will also be carried by Apple Premium Resellers (where they will probably be cheaper to buy).
