Smartphones are pretty popular these days, but not everyone feels they need one. In fact, my guess is that if you ask the average joe why he bought his smartphone, access to the world’s largest social network Facebook is at the top of most people’s lists.
Facebook is now announcing a new mobile app that targets regular cell phone users who just want to use their phones to type in an occasional status update, not surf Google Earth or augment reality. Called Facebook for Feature Phones, the new program is a Java app and will reportedly work on more than 2,500 devices from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, LG and others.
What’s it do? Well, Facebook for Feature Phones doesn’t bring the entire Facebook experience to the dumbphones bouncing around in your pocket, but it does manage to give you access to your news stream, wall posts, photo galleries and even avail yourself of contacts synchronization.
Even better? The app is being launched simultaneously with a new deal being offered by select carriers, providing free data access to Facebook for Feature Phones for up to 90 days. Sadly, though, not a single one of those carriers is in America, although if you’re a Canadian Mobilicity customer, hey, watch out for free data to come to your network soon!
