Have you been eyeing up the first Intel 6-core chip and wondering how on earth you are going to save the $1,049.99 asking price? At 3.33GHz, and with 6-cores, the Core i7 980X sure is a desirable chip to have at the heart of your machine.
But Intel may have a problem in the form of its old rival AMD. While Intel is enjoying the premium on each $1,000+ 980X sale, AMD has just started offering its Phenom II X6 1055T 2.8GHz 6-core chip for just $222.29. Not fast enough for you? Then you can always pre-order the 3.2GHz Phenom II X6 1090T for just $324.65.
Both processors have appeared on Amazon, and stock is available of the 1055T chip right now. At $222.29 it is a 6-core chip nearly 5-times cheaper than the Intel offering. We don’t know how the two chips compare in terms of performance, but surely saving $827 and still getting a 6-core processor is more than a little tempting. If you can wait, then the 3.2GHz model is still going to be an absolute bargain of a chip when it finally becomes available.
AMD is not only attempting to compete with Intel at the top-end of the processor market, but is also attacking the budget-conscious buyer with the recent announcement of sub-$100 Phenom II and Athlon II 4- and 2-core chips.
