One of the most popular handsets in the world during its time, the Samsung Galaxy S2 looks a bit long in the tooth now. However, earlier this year, Samsung refreshed the handset and gave it a few modern internals. The Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus was announced in January, but after months of waiting, fans can finally get their hands on the smartphone.

An online retailer has put the Galaxy S2 Plus for sale with an attractive price tag of Rs 22,900. Another has put it up for sale for Rs 23,349.

A slim body, just like the Galaxy S2

The Galaxy S2 Plus (GT-I9105) runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean out of the box. In terms of performance, the S2 Plus should be a capable handset. Under the hood is a Broadcom BC28155 1.2GHz dual-core processor coupled with 1GB of RAM. The GPU inside is a Broadcom VideoCore IV graphics card, which brings support for 1080p encode and decode, along with higher resolution camera support and faster 2D and 3D graphics. We have previously seen this GPU in the Nokia 808 PureView.

The Galaxy S2 Plus retains the 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display of the S2. With a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, we feel it’s slightly lacking in the display department. A qHD display would have been more befitting for a 2013 launch.

On the back of the S2 Plus is an 8 megapixel camera, which we suspect runs a slightly modified firmware than the Galaxy S3. It brings support for touch and autofocus along with face and smile detection, and several shooting modes. The camera is accompanied by an LED flash for low-light shooting and it has full HD video recording capability. The front-facing camera is of the 2 megapixel variety, which should be more than good for video calls or self-shots.

The Galaxy S2 Plus has a Super AMOLED Plus display

The phone is currently available in white and bluish grey colours, but the design is very similar to the Galaxy S2, complete with a chin on the back where the battery cover pops up. Under the back panel is a 1650 mAh battery, which is a bit worrisome, but we will have to wait for some real world tests before passing a judgement.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus comes with an inbuilt memory of 8GB, which can be further extended up to 64GB thanks to the microSD card slot.

Here are the key specs of the Galaxy S2 Plus
4.3-inch WVGA (480 x 800) Super AMOLED Plus display
HSPA, EDGE/GPRS
Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot
Bluetooth v3.0 with A2DP
GPS with A-GPS support and GLONASS
8 megapixel primary camera with LED Flash with 2 megapixel front-facing unit
8GB internal memory + microSD card slot (up to 64GB)

There is a variant of the S2 Plus with an NFC chip. However, it looks like the Indian version of the handset will not have that particular feature.
