With the latest update of iOS released yesterday, Apple added the support for Punjabi keyboard. Now you will be able to add Punjabi keyboard without the need of installing third party apps.

This was the long requested and much needed feature as Punjabi is now the 10th most spoken language in the world, and there is an on–going petition on change.org to add Punjabi as a system language on major platforms like Android, iOS, and Windows.

As our support for the on–going petition, we mentioned that there was no option listed on the keyboards available to add Punjabi keyboard, but now with the iOS 9 update, not just one but there are two keyboards added: Punjabi (Phonetic) and Punjabi (Standard) keyboard. With phonetic keyboard, from the definition of phonetic you would need to combine single characters to form there complete sounds, when in fact for the standard keyboard there are combinations of characters already available.

There are several benefits to this as now it would be really easy to add Punjabi keyboard to your iOS device, unlike before, if you want to add a Punjabi keyboard to your device you would have to install third party apps. Additionally this gives us an option for a more stable and secure keyboard to use.

To add these keyboards, make sure you have iOS 9 update installed on your device, now go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard, then from the list of available keyboards you should see Punjabi (Phonetic) and Punjabi (Standard) keyboards, select and click done.

This is really a nice effort by Apple and good news for the Punjabi language for getting more recognition in the tech world. In the future we hope to see similar updates on other platforms like Android and Windows.
