The End:

So we come to the end of the IPL Auction 2016.

Rajiv Shukla believes he is giving a compliment when he says, "Some of the pictures weren't even available with us but the franchises did a lot of research on domestic players."

So just to recap. The biggest buys of the day were Shane Watson (Rs 9.5 Crore to RCB) and Pawan Negi (Rs 8.5 Crore to Delhi). It was pretty shocking that Martin Guptill did not attract any bids while the likes of Irfan Pathan went for just his base price. Meanwhile there was a lot more interest in someone like little known legspinner M Ashwin (Rs 4.5 Crore to Pune). Each team went after specific players with glee but there definitely seemed to have been a lot more research done in the domestic performances. Someone like Eklavya Dwivedi (Rs 1 Crore to Gujarat Lions), who was noticed by Suresh Raina, his Uttar Pradesh skipper also benefited from the same.

That said, the auction is a game in itself. A lot of the price tags may not actually reflect the value of a player but more about the strategy of the team and the way an auction is shaping up. More on that later though.

For now you should have a look at how the squads have shaped up.That will be a better indicator of how each team performed in the auction.

The Auction so far:

So Delhi have been a little smart. So have been Rajkot with all their buys. Those two teams seem set to have a core set with which they want to build around. Delhi have been stringent with the spending but bid big for someone they really wanted. And Chris Morris does add a lot of value for them.

RCB have gone for the big names.

"Praveen Kumar's IPL record is amazing," says Brad Hodge, the coach of Gujarat Lions on air. More auction action coming up soon. We'll have the accelerated process now. Means more quick bids, probably a lot of players unsold as well.

Rajiv Shukla on IPL's supremacy:

Everybody is entitled to launch their own league. We cant stop them. But IPL will have its own mark. We are going to increase our telecast. They can play their own league but they can't compete with IPL.

Current Purse Remaining:

(In crores)

DD - 25.95
KXIP - 16.5
KKR - 16.35
MI - 8.105
RCB - 10.125

RPSG - 13.9
GL - 14.6

That's the end of the session:

Biggest buys of this session were Chris Morris, Mohit Sharma, Mitchell Marsh and Sanju Samson among others. The biggest surprise thrown up was of course the bid of Rs 7 Crore for Morris but Delhi Daredevils see something in him.

We have some reaction from the teams. Here's what they have to say.

Bangalore - Amrit Thomas, RCB director

Shane Watson was we were looking for. He adds a lot of balance and he has been in good form. You can judge from his recent performance as well.We were really interested in Yuvraj. All the best to the team. Hopefully hell play for us sometime in the future.

Pune - Raghu Iyer, COO

I cant completely tell you what the strategy is. We were looking for all rounders as well. We are very happy with the players weve bought. They are doing very well.Every individual team will have their own strategy. We thought there was no point for having such players on the bench.

So it has been a frenetic auction session. Shane Watson (9.5 Crore to RCB), Yuvraj Singh (7 Crore to SRH) and Chris Morris (7 Crore to Delhi Daredevils) were the biggest buys.

The surprises apart from Morris included Carlos Brathwaite (4.2 Crore to Delhi), Mohit Sharma (6.5 Crore to KXIP) while Mitchell Marsh attracted a pretty hefty 4.8 Crore from Pune. Nehra was bought for Rs 5.5 Crore by SRH and Praveen Kumar was heavily bid for before being picked up by Gujarat Lions for 3.5 Crore

Irfan Pathan was bagged at his base price of just 1 Crore by Pune. Colin Munro for 30 Lakh by KKR, Travis Head for 50 Lakh by RCB were probably a steal as well. Amongst the wicketkeepers the biggest buys were Sanju Samson (4.2 Crore to Delhi), Jos Buttler (3.8 Crore to Mumbai) and Dinesh Karthik (Rs 2.3 Crore to Gujarat Lions).

Some of the big names to not attract a bid included Michael Hussey, Aaron Finch, Martin Guptill, Usman Khawaja, Darren Sammy, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Hashim Amla, Mahela Jaywardene, Thisara Perera and Cheteshwar Pujara.
