Stopover to iPhone 5: Apple took the wraps off a new iPhone, but may have left some fans wishing for more than an updated version of last year's smartphone. Here's what Apple added to the iPhone 4 to make it the iPhone 4S.
Processor: The iPhone 4S is powered by Apple's dual-core A5 chip, the one that is also present inside the iPad 2. The A5 chip delivers up to twice the processing power and up to seven times faster graphics than iPhone 4.
Camera: The iPhone 4S includes an 8 megapixel camera that has a new custom lens with a larger f/2.4 aperture. Apple has also made the camera app faster to launch and has added access to the camera from the lock screen itself.
Operating system: With the launch of iPhone 4S also comes iOS 5, Apple's latest mobile operating system with over 200 new features.
iCloud: A set of free cloud services to automatically and wirelessly store content on the cloud and push it to all connected devices.
Full HD video: iPhone 4S can also now record video in full 1080p HD resolution.
Network: The iPhone 4S will work on both CDMA and GSM networks.
Battery backup: The iPhone 4S promises to deliver 8 hours of 3G talk time, 14 hours of 2G (GSM) talk time, 6 hours of browsing, 9 hours on Wi-Fi, 10 hours of video and 40 hours of music.
Faster downloads: The iPhone 4S supports twice the download speed with HSDPA of up to 14.4 Mbps
Intelligent assistant: iPhone 4S also introduces Siri, an intelligent assistant that helps users get things done just by asking. Siri can help make calls, send text messages or email, schedule meetings and reminders, make notes, search the Internet, find local businesses, get directions and more. Users can also get answers, find facts and even perform complex calculations just by asking.
Storage: Apple also included a new 64GB variant to the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 4S will be available in the US for a suggested retail price of $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB model and $399 for the new 64GB model.
