A day after the resignation of Navjot Singh Sidhu from the BJP SADpresident Sukhbir Badal today said: “Sidhu is known for his dramatics and if he joins the AAP he is just one more comedian in the AAP pack. His outburst’s against us over the past year- and- a- half was all part of his strategy to part always with the Akali- BJP alliance. If he is made the CM candidate, it will definitely spice up the elections and will see an interesting fight in Punjab as I love challenges.”
The Akali leadership, however, faces the daunting task to keep their flock together. At least two Akali MLAs — former CPS Inderbir Singh Bolaria and other who rejected the post of CPS, Pargat Singh — believed to be in talks with the other political parties, were suspended tonight by the party for indiscipline and anti-party activities.
A scion of one of the most prominent political families from Malwa, who was recently replaced as halqa incharge is believed to be shifting his loyalties to another party.
With the party finalising the list of candidates for the 94 seats (remaining 23 Assembly seats will be contested by alliance partner BJP), those being denied tickets too are raising their voice of dissent.
Sukhbir said, “In the political system there is a floating population who tends to switch sides. They don’t have any loyalty for the party, and their leaving won’t make a difference.”
He said of the 94 seats that his party would contest, candidates for 60 seats have been decided and the candidates were already working in their constituencies.
“We have changed 30-40 candidates this time. We are changing constituencies of some candidates and are also bringing in new faces. We will zero in on the remaining candidates in a few days,” he said.
Sukhbir denied that there was any friction with the BJP. Asked about the recent outbursts by minister Madan Mohan Mittal and Vijay Sampla, the Deputy CM said these were minor issues and had been amicably resolved.
