Chandigarh November 17:

SAD Member of Parliament Paramjit Kaur Gulshan, who is also head of the party's woman cell, has taken a strong exception to Congress MP Ravneet Bittu's statement describing the movement against female foeticide under the aegis of 'Nanhi Chhaan' as a scheme to derive political mileage.

In a statement issued here, Gulshan said that it was not expected from persons like Ravneet Bittu, and he should understand the sanctity of Nanhi Chhaan movement. She said that instead of appreciating the fact that Harsimrat Kaur Badal without any personal interest has been driven by a mission to help the society get rid of deep seated prejudices and evils that is having long term impact on the demographic profile of the State, Bittu was trying to defame the women as a class, by politicising the purely social movement.

She said that the Congress that did nothing during the last 60 years to combat the nefarious practice of female foeticide, and was perplexed by the success of Nanhi Chhaan in rural heartland as well as urban areas of Punjab, and was trying to pick holes in this sacred mission.

She said that Harshimrat's campaign against social evils like female foeticide and ecological pollution was a sacred mission and a matter of deep commitment for every woman of Punjab and north India facing this problem. She reminded him that even the President of India had deemed the movement significant and apolitical enough to lend her own name, support and presence to the movement.
