According to sources, Research in Motion will launch its rumored tablet in November. The device is to share exactly the same screen size as iPad, which is 9.7 inches, and cost the same $499 as Apple’s device. Connectivity-wise, it’ll sport Bluetooth and WiFi, but not 3G because users will “connect to the internet through their BlackBerry smartphones,” sources told Bloomberg and added the following:
RIM’s tablet will capitalize on the BlackBerry’s e-mail capabilities and the phone’s popularity with corporate users, one person said. The tablet will be closely integrated with the smartphone’s e-mail system and will have similar security for messaging.
This story echoes the rumor-mill, except for a slight variation in the device name: some bloggers think it’ll be called BlackTab whereas Bloomberg mentions Blackpad because RIM this month acquired the blackpad.com domain. Naming conventions aside, Betanews reported that the device should run a 1GHz processor and feature hardware-accelerated support for Adobe Flash. A likely candidate for the application processor is Marvel’s system-on-a-chip powering the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and also to be found on OLPC’s upcoming XO-3 tablet, analyst Ashkok Kumar told CNET.
