racisim against sikhs

An Ontario teen’s racist YouTube rant—in which she rails against the “Turbanators” at her Brampton high school—has snowballed into a police investigation and a massive online blowback.

In the nearly-two-minute video, the girl laments her move back to Brampton from Toronto, and says she is sick of all the South Asians at her high school.

“I walk down the halls and all I smell is curry,” says the Caucasian teen, identified by other web users as a student at Turner Fenton Secondary School. “Curry-brown, brown-curry. They go together. Can we get some more white people at my school?”

Peel Police Const. Thomas Ruttan says the department is investigating 16-year-old Kyla Pawis after she posted a video telling Brampton’s “brown” residents to leave Canada because it’s not a “terrorist country.” She also accuses people who wear turbans of using them to conceal knives. He said the police probe will look at whether the video constitutes hate speech.

Several calls to the school on Tuesday afternoon were not answered.

The video was originally posted on YouTube, but was removed after being deemed in violation of the site’s policy against hate speech. The same content was re-posted on low-brow video blog WorldStarHipHop on Monday and had received more than 150,000 views by Tuesday afternoon.

As the video draws to a close, Pawis spells out her name and provides her Twitter handle in case people who share her views want to contact her. As might have been expected, the Internet did what it does best—it took this information and ran.

Within hours of the post on WorldStarHipHop, web users had already uncovered her cellphone number and links to her other social media profiles and quickly made them publicly available. As of Tuesday, the cellphone number listed had been deactivated, as well as Pawis’ Facebook, Twitter and YouTube profiles.

All that remained of her online self was a Tumblr account, which contains a video blog from February 2 in which she says she has contemplated suicide and has battled depression since Grade 8.

In a Toronto Star report Pawis' father, contacted yesterday, said “I’m angry at the content of the video — it’s not who she is as a person or how she was brought up." He told the paper the video was "totally out of character" for Pawis, and that she deeply regrets making the video. According to students at the school, she was jumped Monday and had to be escorted off the campus by police for safety.

"She's getting the help she needs," he told the Brampton Guardian, which also reported that he'd gotten in touch with the paper himself to extend an apology on his daughter's behalf.

"She would like to give an apology," he said. "I don't think the time is right now."

Meanwhile, a virtual tsunami swirled around this issue on Tuesday, as people tweeted, blogged and recorded video of their disbelief and disgust with the racist tirade.

“Why... would you post this and not expect to get hated on,” wrote a Tumblr user identified as a 17-year-old name Kim. “People from freaking three hours away are coming to beat her ass. You have a right to your opinion, but there is a point when it becomes a hate crime and you just need to stop. She better watch out because it’s not only the South Asians that are after her.”

Other commenters have parodied the video or mused on whether she had been expelled from school, with many posts containing threats to her safety and to that of those around her.

“What school did you go to? I think I might have to kill your teacher. Someone needs to teach you something, man,” says video blogger Harjit Bhandal. “I can’t even begin to stress how stupid you are... I feel bad insulting you because all of Brampton is doing it already.”
