MUKTSAR/MOGA: Two weeks after widespread violence in the zila parishad and block samiti elections the panchayat elections on Monday saw a repetition of the violence at many places. The police was again accused of helping the Akalis in rigging and booth capturing.
At Khudia Maha Singh village of Lambi assembly constituency of Muktsar, where the Congress and SAD were in a close contest, a fight between supporters of the two led to firing by a block president of the SAD and Congress workers thrashing him in the presence of police.
As the SHO failed to control the situation, SSP and DSP (D), Muktsar, reached the village to control the situation. However, in a complaint to the election commission, Amarjot Kaur, Harbhaj Singh and Sarwati Devi, Congress-supported candidates for the post of panch, alleged that as senior police officers in Muktsar helped the Akalis in booth capturing at the village, so they decided to withdraw from the election at around 3 pm.
Gurpreet Singh, SSP, Muktsar, however, denied the allegations of police helping in booth capturing. The police reached the village to control the situation as the Akalis and Congress workers were fighting each other, he said.
In Faridkot, local MLA Avtar Singh Brar accused the police of helping the Akalis. He alleged that the three police officials who were removed from the election-related duties by the election commission were seen helping the Akalis in booth capturing at many villages of the district.
In Moga district Congress MLA Joginder Pal Jain was pelted with stones when he reached Ramoowala village after there were reports of Akalis capturing a booth at the village. Sarpanch Harnek Singh sustained serious injuries when he was allegedly fired upon by some Akalis.
Harnek Singh, a Congress leader and village sarpanch, alleged that when he objected to the Akalis polling bogus votes, he was fired at and was hit in one of his legs.
As Joginder Pal Jain, Moga MLA, also reached the village, the Akalis allegedly pelted his vehicle with stones. Jain escaped from the scene along with his supporters.
Moga DSP Bhula Singh denied the allegations. He said violence at the polling station started after Jain reached the village and incited Congress workers. The DSP rather blamed Congress sarpanch Harnek Singh for engaging some goondas to terrorize villagers.
