Actor Mithun Chakraborty has been named lifetime trustee of the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy.

The Mumbai-based academy is involved in preserving the legacy Phalke, considered as the father of Indian cinema. It is also involved in recognising old talent and encouraging newcomers in the film industry.

The academy already has film trade union leader Santosh Singh Jain, former Maharashtra bureaucrat Govind Swaroop, filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani, Sanjay Patel, Sangram Shirke, Neena Jalan and Ram Gopal Gupta as its lifetime trustees.

Chakraborty has been associated with film employees' union for several years.

A delegation of trustees and other members including noted character actors Chandra Shekhar and Ram Mohan met Chakraborty at his residence to chalk out a plan for the Dadasaheb Phalke Jayanti celebrations on April 30 and Phalke Academy awards presentation event, which will be held soon, a release issued said.
