On June 6, 1984, over 1,000 lives were claimed during Operation Bluestar, the raid on Sikh’s holiest shrine Golden Temple to cow down extremists led by Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale. This November 22, 1984-photo shows Kar Sewa at the Golden Temple.

A fountainhead of Sikh fundamentalism, the Damdami Taksal was then headed by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a fiery Sikh leader. Damdami Taksal was the nerve centre of anti-government extremism that led to the 1984 Operation Bluestar.

This September 30, 1984- photo shows the premises outside the Golden Temple in Amritsar after the Operation Bluestar was completed. Over 1,000 lives were claimed in the army operation.
