As the countdown to the Haryana panchayat polls began on Tuesday — the first day for filing nominations — a former sarpanch of Bharan village in Rohtak district was shot dead by unidentified men in broad daylight.
Kaptan Singh’s bullet-riddled body was recovered from a car at Madina village of the district. Preliminary investigations indicate that the killers knew the victim well and were travelling with him in the same car. “After opening fire at the former sarpanch, the killers fled the scene,” a villager said on the condition of anonymity.
The police, who reached the spot after being informed by villagers, said the possibility of a personal enmity cannot be ruled out.
On the complaint of the former sarpanch’s family, an FIR was registered against three unidentified persons.
A team of the forensic wing of the local police also visited the crime spot and collected evidence. The body of the deceased was later sent for post-mortem.
The three-phase polls to Panchayati Raj Institutions in Haryana will be held on October 4, 11 and 18.
