Two Delhi residents saved the lives of 193 people, including three infants, on Wednesday when they spotted a suspected “fire” on the tail of a flight and informed the police.
However, denying the fire, GoAir said its Bengaluru-bound flight made an emergency landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport here at 1953 hours on Wednesday soon after takeoff, due to a technical glitch.
The airline said all the 187 passengers, including three infants, were accommodated in a subsequent flight.
Two residents of Goyla Dairy in west Delhi’s Najafgarh spotted the suspected fire while the GoAir flight was flying over their locality and informed police, officials said.
Police then informed the CISF control room and the message was conveyed to the airport operations control center (AOCC) and air traffic control (ATC) room.
The flight captain of G8557 was alerted of the problem after which the aircraft made the emergency landing.
Police said there was no fire incident and the fire brigade was not called.
Officials said the flight’s one engine had “caught fire”, but landed safely, apparently because the captain had turned off the engine.
DGCA is conducting an enquiry into the incident.
