SANGRUR: Starting from Punjab's rural heartland in this district this brilliant student has rose on to win laurels for the country at international fora. Rubbing shoulders with over 300 students from 70 countries, Anupam Dev Goel won the bronze medal at the 40th International Chemistry Olympiad at Budapest, Hungary. One of only four Indian students selected for the contest, he returned home on Wednesday.

Earlier, in May, Anupam had been commended for best performance in theory as well experiments at the orientation cum selection camp for the Olympiad at the Homi Bhabha Center, Bombay. Though he was the first student from Punjab ever to win an Olympiad medal missing out on the gold still rankles him.

Talking to TOI Anupam, who studies at IIT Delhi, said though he was "happy" about his performance, not getting the gold medal was very frustrating.

He said becoming the first Punjabi for achieving the fate gets him mental satisfaction and an urge to do more. Only last month Anupam had secured second position across the national engineering entrance exam.

"We are proud of this all and latest achievement has put us on cloud nine", said his mother Meenakshi, a bank employee, and father Ashwinder Goel, a pharmacist.
