Bangladeshi troops gunned down at least 6 attackers and rescued 13 hostages, including foreigners, during an operation to clear a restaurant in the diplomatic zone of Dhaka that was stormed by armed militants, a senior security official said on Saturday.

The Holy Artisan Bakery Cafe in Dhaka’s Gulshan area, which is popular with diplomats and expats, was targeted by about 8-10 attackers late on Friday night. The militants open fired and set off explosive devices during the assault and took an unspecified number of people as hostage.

The bakery has been cleared by troops, who gunned down atleast 6 attackers, Lt Col Tuhin Mohammad Masud of the Rapid Action Battalion told HT.
The troops also rescued 13 hostages, including two Sri Lankans and a Japanese national. “The Japanese national was injured,” Masud said.
“Troops were combing buildings near the restaurant as it was believed that 3 to 4 attackers were holed up in the area”, he added.
An Indian national was freed or managed to escape the restaurant before troops launched final operation, sources told HT. However, further details about him were not immediately available.

The troops had also detained several people in the restaurant and checks were being conducted to ascertain if any of them were involved in the attack.
The Islamic state had claimed the attack, probably the biggest assault in the Bangladeshi capital, through its Amaq news agency.
