Amazon must be happy it is getting another distributor for the Kindle. AT&T has announced it will start carrying Amazon’s e-reader in stores nationwide beginning Sunday, March 6. AT&T store visitors will have the ability to take the device on a test-drive before making a purchase.
AT&T becomes the first wireless carrier to offer Kindle in-store across the U.S., but the relationship between Amazon and AT&T is not a new one. It is actually AT&T’s cellular network that provides wireless connectivity in the U.S. allowing owners access to the Kindle Store when not connected to a Wi-Fi network. The Kindle Store currently offers more than 810,000 books for readers to choose from including 107 of the 111 New York Times Best Sellers.
The Kindle 3G offers users an improved Pearl E Ink display which is easier to read and allows for reading in direct sunlight. The e-reader comes with storage for up to 3,500 books and one month of battery life with the wireless off. Unlike plans offered by AT&T and Verizon Wireless for the iPad, there are no monthly recurring fees for connectivity. Consumers simply pay for the device which covers their 3G access to the AT&T network.
AT&T plans to offer the Kindle 3G at the same price point as other distributors which is $189.99
