Chandigarh April 4:

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Captain Amarinder Singh warned the SAD-BJP Government against grabbing and converting the historic Khalsa College of Amritsar into a private university.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Captain Amarinder Singh maintained that this was a clear ploy by the Badals and the in-laws of the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal to grab the historic institution which was not only academically important but had historic and cultural significance as well.

Former Chief Minister asserted that this was yet another step of the ruling SAD-BJP alliance to grab anything and everything that they think can spin them money. He observed that the ruling family might have realised that setting up a university generated good money and hence they were trying to grab this historic institution and convert it into a private university.

Captain Amarinder Singh pointed out: “The Khalsa College Amritsar is no ordinary institution. It belongs to our cultural heritage which needs to be preserved at all costs”, he said, while adding, upgrading an institution was welcome, but certain institutions, like Khalsa College of Amritsar, which have historic and cultural significance need to be preserved and retained in their original form.

Asserting that the move was clearly aimed at grabbing a historic institution, Captain Amarinder Singh pointed out, the Khalsa Charitable Trust, running the college, has already inducted a lot of members from the ruling family. He also condemned the registration of criminal cases against the faculty members of the college who were opposed to converting it into a university. This is too dictatorial, Captain Amarinder remarked, while warning that those trying to misuse power must know and realise that the Governments are bound to change and this one is certain to change soon.
