Chandigarh April 27:

Six Congress MLAs asked to file their replies on May 10 in response to the notices issued to them by Punjab Assembly Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon for their alleged gross misconduct during the recently held Budget session.

However, one of the MLAs, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, refused to appear before the Privileges Committee of the Vidhan Sabha in this connection, headed by Adampur MLA Sarabjit Singh Makkar. Khaira said that his nephew had murdered an innocent man a few days ago that’s why he could not appear before the committee.

Besides Khaira, the other five MLAs include Makhan Singh, Ripjit Singh Brar, Surinderpal Singh Sibia, Balbir Singh Sidhu, and Gurpreet Singh Kang. All the six MLAs were asked by Speaker Kahlon to explain to the Committee their “misconduct” during the Budget session by standing on the Bench of Leader of the Opposition and raising anti-Government slogans.

Refusing to appear before the Privileges Committee, Khaira said: “There has been widespread anger and resentment in society against the heinous criminal act of the nephew of Makkar... Keeping in view the sentiments of society, I have decided to boycott Makkar in his capacity as chairman of the Privileges Committee and will not appear before him...”

He further said that in his letter to the Speaker he had said that he should either replace Makkar as chairman of the Privileges Committee or have the matter decided ex-parte. Kahlon had earlier said that the Committee would take further action in the matter after getting the MLAs’ response. On March 17, even as some members raised slogans in the well of the House against the Government, the six MLAs had climbed on the desk of Leader of the Opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and attacked the SAD-BJP Government.
