Valley of Flowers - Location
The panoramic valley of flowers is located at a distance of 16 kms from Badrinath and 24 kms from Govindghat. Sprawling on an area of 87.7 square kms, the site was discovered only in the year 1931 and was declared as a national reserve and a world heritage site in the year 1982.
The best time to visit the valley and the National Park is during the monsoon months from June to mid of October during this time the flowers bloom to the maximum offering a splendid view to the beholder. The valley of flowers is a dream destination for all the nature lovers, botanists and adventurers alike. Trekking is the only way to reach the valley and while doing so tourists are greeted with some of the most spectacular moods of nature.
The entry fee to the valley is Rs 150 per person and the charges of take a professional camera inside is another Rs 150. Regular still camera can be carried inside for free.
Valley of Flowers Attractions
The beautiful valley of flowers offers a plethora of attractions for the tourists. The valley of Flowers is part of the Nanda devi National Park, which is declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The valley is any photographer’s dream, with varied colors blanketing the green marshes, rivers flowing tranquilly and the snow covered mountains serving as an excellent backdrop.
The Valley of Flowers has a national park where tourists can sight snow leopard, musk deer, red fox, common langur, bharal, serow, Himalayan black bear. Avian attractions include pheasants, Himalayan Golden Eagle, Griffon Vulture, Snow Partridge, Himalayan Snow cock, Himalayan Monal,Snow Pigeon, Sparrow Hawk. A wide variety of colourful butterflies too can be found here.
While in Valley of Flowers flora attractions include orchids, poppies, primulas, calendulas, daisies and anemones. Please note that the National Park is open only during the months from June to October as during the rest of the year, it is blanketed with snow.
How to Reach The Valley
In order to reach the valley tourists need to undertake a 17 kms long and strenous trek, but it is worth it. The trek begins from Govindghat, which can be conveniently reached from Joshimath. Tourists have the options of hiring a car or any other vehicele from Joshimath to Govindghat. Further from here, trekking is the only option.
The trek starts from Govind Ghat and as one crosses Pulana, the ethereal beauty of the valley starts to unfold. Untamed wilderness and free flowing rivers allures the trekkers to make a stop over to soak in the beauty. However, this is not plausible as camping an over night stay is not possible in the valley or even en route. Tourists can stop at Ghanghariya,w hich is 14 kms from Govind Ghat. From here the valley of flowers is just 3 kms away.
One can hire a pony from Govind Ghat to Ghangharia for carrying the luggage at the price of Rs 400. From Ghanghariya entrance of pony is not allowed (due to ban on the area as a grazing ground) and tourists have to undertake the next 3 kms steep climb journey through trekking in order to reach the fairy land.
The panorama of Valley of Flowers is so enchanting and one day is not enough to admire the bliss that God has bestowed on the valley. Further, tourists have the option of returning back to Goveindghat or move further to reach Hemkund Sahib.
