17 girl students raped; 7 school staff suspended
Jind, February 8
In what could be termed as one of the most heinous acts in recent times, 17 schoolgirls of Class VIII and IX were raped by their teachers for eight months in Durjanpur, near here.

The incident came to light when one of the girls studying in Class IX got pregnant and told her parents of the rape.
Two other girls also had got pregnant, but the teachers had forcibly got abortions done.
In the third case, the teachers had reportedly approached the family and offered them Rs 1.5 lakh to get the child aborted.
But the parents refused and called a mahapanchayat (village committee meet) where other 16 girls came forward and revealed that they too had been raped by their teachers.
The extremely conservative community of Jats is furious and has threatened to kill the two accused teachers if the administration fails to take any swift action against them.
The two accused teachers — who taught mathematics and physical education at the Government Senior Secondary School, Durjanpur — are now absconding.
The parents of the girl who were initially reluctant to report the matter to the police have now lodged an FIR at the Durjanpur police station.
SDM Mohammad Shahin, Durjanpur police station in-charge, said: “As per the information, father of one of the girls has come forward and lodged an FIR at the police station. The FIR has been lodged under Section 676-B, IPC.”
The Haryana Government has swung into action and suspended seven members of the staff, including the two accused teachers and the Principal.
Ajit Singh Sangwan, Joint Director of Education Haryana while expressing his dismay at the incident said: “They would do all in their power to apprehend the teachers and punish them,” and added that “all teachers of the school are being transferred and a brand new staff is being brought in.”
The District Education Officer has also been asked to inquire into the matter and submit his report within a week, sources said.
Earlier, villagers had locked up the school demanding the dismissal of the two teachers and opened it only after persuasion of district authorities. — ANI
