In the district of Kulgam district of South Kashmir, a sensational instance of communal harmony and brotherhood was exhibited among the two communities. Muslims performed the last rites of a 84 year old Kashmiri Pandit.

On the flip side, Janki Nath refused to leave the valley when all others in his family fled under threat from militants. He died on Saturday but there was no family member or any Kashmiri pandit to perform his last rites. Then the local Muslims took the responsibility and performed the last rites of the deceased and mourned his death as one of their own.

They described him as their “brother” and a dear neighbor. It is worthwhile noting that Janki Nath was the only Kashmiri Pandit living among 5000 Muslims in Malvan, Kalgam district. He had retired from govt. service in 1990.

Positive news such as this bodes well for the future of Kashmir.
