A replica of Titanic II built by Australian millionaire Clive Palmer will be sailed from Southampton to New York in 2017. Not only the design but the facility of Titanic-II is exactly similar to that of old Titanic. Palmer is trying hard to get 1000 cruise ship passengers for the ship’s maiden commercial voyage. Titanic II equipped with air conditioning will have Casino, helipad, swimming pools, Millionaire suite and shopping area, Chart room, Turkish baths, Gym, smoking rooms, hospitals but there will be no television and internet connectivity. CSC Jingling Shipyard is building the ship.
Posco steel plant in Odisha, the much-delayed $ 12 billion project is set to be operational in upcoming days. The project which is the biggest foreign direct investment (FDI) to India was marred in controversies and issues like land acquisition and was delayed in clearances since it was announced in 2005. The Posco project will grant mining concession to the South Korean firm in an advanced stage of processing. It was announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after holding extensive talks with Park Geun-hye, President of South Korea which was held in New Delhi. The project will witness further growth of the economic ties between the two countries.
Abhinav, The Indian Coast Guard Ship was commissioned in Kochi. The Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) was commissioned by Anurag G Thapiyal, the Director General of Coast Guard Vice Admiral. It’s the third in the series of 20 Fast Patrol Vessels. Cochin Shipyard Limited has designed and built Abhinav. Commandant (JG) Raman Kumar commands ship and has complement of 5 officers and 34 other ranks. The ship will be based at Kochi under the administrative and operational control of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (West). ICGS Abhinav ship literally means Modern.
It’s clear that Rahul Gandhi won’t be a prime ministerial candidate. It was revealed by Congress President Sonia Gandhi. She has rejected demands by various party leaders from various states to appoint him as the PM candidate before elections by saying that there has been no such tradition in the party.
The seventh edition of famous five-day Jaipur Literature Festival is going on. The popular and biggest annual literary festival in Asia has featured more than 2 lakh literature lovers from across the country and around 240 speakers which includes two Nobel laureates Harold Varmus and Amartya Sen. The laureates will have conversations on a wide range of subjects. The festival will end on January 21. Famous author Shashi Tharoor, poet and lyricist Javed Akhtar, author Jonathan Franzen, feminist and journalist Gloria Steinem, author Jhumpa Lahiri, poet Ashok Vajpeyi and various others renowned laureates have taken participate. From history and environment, philosophy and art, Bollywood, international relations, human emotions to politics altogether in 175 sessions discussions will be held in six venues of Diggi Palace.
Appointment
Jamila Bayaz is the first women in Afghanistan who will be appointed as the police chief of one of the districts of Kabul province. Bayaz is the first woman police chief of an entire district. Her appointment will give the way to more Afghani women and it also shows that women position in Afghan society is improving since the Taliban were expelled from power in 2001. There are 22 districts in Kabul province.
Resignation
Garry Kenneth Toomey, chief executive officer (CEO) of Jet Airways (India) Ltd. has resigned from his post after joining the airline hardly seven months ago. Toomey has quit the job without giving any details about the reason of his resignation. Ravishankar Gopalakrishnan, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of airline will act as the acting CEO till the new CEO is appointed by board of members.
Death
Adhip Chaudhuri , an eminent Indian economics professor of US has passed away at the age of 63 in Vienna, Virginia. An international economist who taught at Georgetown University was suffering from lung cancer. Chaudhuri was recognised as “Teacher of the Year” for three times.
Suchitra Sen, a legendary Bengali actor has passed away at the age of 82 in Kolkata. She was undergoing treatment in Kolkata and had suffered a massive cardiac arrest. Sen was known for movies like “Aandhi”. She had acted above 50 movies of which 6 were in Hindi. More than three decades, she was only meeting her family members and had withdrawn herself from the limelight.
