On 15 January, the 66th Army Day was observed in India. On this day, General K M Cariappa was appointed as the first Commander-in-Chief of independent India. In 1948, Cariappa succeeded British Army General Roy Butcher on this day.
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has fixed rupee reference rate at 61.5885 against US Dollar. For the pound and yen against the Rupee, the exchange rates were then fixed at 101.0914 and 58.99 per 100 yen which is based on the reference rates for the cross-currency and dollar. The reference rate is based on the SDR-Rupee rate that will be based on this rate and the rates of few selective banks.
A long-term plan Money Maxima was launched by Tata AIA Life. A product which is compliant with new IRDA guidelines. In 2014-15, India’s economy will grow above 6 % and by 2016-17 it will grow above 7.1 %, as per the World Bank. According to World Bank the reason was that domestic investment increased and global demand recovered. The economic growth of China is estimated to remain flat in 2014 at 7.7 % which is slowing to 7.5 % for the upcoming 2 years due to sless reliance on policy-induced investment.

Sourav Ganguly, Former Indian cricket captain will be awarded with an honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) degree for his great contribution to Indian cricket by the renowned Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU), Shibpur. Ganguly has made tremendous contribution to Indian cricket with his brilliant capaincy.

Appointment
Rajeev Kher, Senior IAS officer has been appointed as a new Commerce Secretary under Department of Commerce. Currently, Kher is a Special Secretary under Department of Commerce in Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India. He is a 1980-batch IAS officer of UP cadre and will succeed S R Rao who is a 1978-batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre.

Portuguese attacker Cristiano Ronaldo has been named as world’s best soccer player for the 2012/2013 season by FIFA. He was just ahead of Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery and Lionel Messi, the Barcelona’s Argentine superstar who was shortlisted to pick up the award for a 5th year in succession. Ronaldo had last won the FIFA World Player award in 2008.
India got its first gold medal in world athletics title through Anju Bobby George although 9 years after the event which was held in Monaco. In 2005, the long jumper George who won the silver at the World Athletics Final. International Association of Athletics Federations upgraded her to the top spot after gold medal winner Tatyana Kotova of Russia for doping.
Maharasthrian Vijay Zol has been selected by the All-India Junior Selection Committee as the captain of India to lead the Under-19 Cricket World Cup. In February 2014, the World Cup will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Zol has also led India to victory in the U-19 Asia Cricket Cup against Pakistan in January 2014. Earlier, India has grabbed the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 3 times in 2012, 2008 and 2000.
Nadine Angerer, Germany goalkeeper has been voted as the best women football player in the world for the year 2013. She has helped Germany to clinch the European Championship in 2013.The current European player of the year, she had defeated Abby Wambach, United States forward who is five-time champion Marta of Brazil.
