CHANDIGARH: Even as over two-and-a-half decades have elapsed since the demand for separation from India in the name of Khalistan was raised by radicals, the embers of hatred for government machinery continue to simmer in the heart of those who left for Canadian shores long back.

However, those who have been born and brought up in Canada feel no indignation towards India as they do not relate with the events which transpired in Punjab. This is what a delegation from Canada had to state during an interaction with the TOI, on Friday night. City of Surrey mayor Dainne Watts said it was plain knowledge that the Sikh community was amongst the largest communities in Canada and the phenomenon was no different in Surrey as well.

She said, "There is large number of people living in Surrey for the past 30 years, who have been living amongst us as Canadians. Although, Canada is a very liberal society and has an accommodating federal government, we would not take kindly to any sort of separatist movement."

Watts said a large number of people from Punjab moved to Canada in 1980s and some of them were later found to be involved in subterfuge activities in an attempt to incite violence in Punjab. "Whenever we have come across any such individual in the country we have dealt with them accordingly," she added.

A councillor with Surrey municipality , Tom Gill, a Canadian of Sikh descent, said he had come in touch with a few people who openly advocated supporting the cause for Khalistan, but added that Indians, of his age had moved past these things. He said, "The average Sikh, born and raised in Canada does not relate to the Khalistan movement and therefore see no point in putting up a fight against the establishment for a separate land. The mind-set of those settled here has undergone only a slight change and it is up to people of new generation to put things in perspective for the older folk."
