The interrogation of Executive Engineer Vinod Thakur, who was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) after the outbreak of jaundice in Shimla, did not make any major headway as he complained of chest pain and was admitted to the cardiac care unit of IGMC Hospital today.
However, the Judicial Magistrate visited him in the hospital following remand sought by the police and was sent to judicial custody for 14 days.
Contractor of the sewage treatment plant Akshay Deogar, who was arrested on January 29 and sent in police remand, was also shifted to the IGMC after he complained of pain. The probe is progressing and SIT is working on various leads, SP, Shimla, DW Negi said.
“SIT is probing the matter from all aspects and action against more officers is not ruled out as more evidence surfaces against the officers of different departments entrusted with the task of maintaining quality of water and supervision of the STP”, he added.
Officials of the Irrigation and Public Health Department, the Shimla Municipal Corporation, the Pollution Control Board and the Health Department are under scanner and the role every officer will be probed and responsibility of erring officers be fixed.
SIT has sought a detailed information from the IPH Department, the Pollution Control Board and the Health Department regarding the inspections to check quality of water and also the number of jaundice patients admitted to the hospital. It will also question the officials concerned of the SMC.
The contractor and the Executive Engineer have applied for bail.
