WOW ! That is what you would probably say when someone pays you for your garbage. It is also a new system — Wealth Out of Waste (WOW) — that the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is planning to work out a unique system to keep the city clean.
The AMC is looking towards engaging agencies that would come to your doorstep and pay you by the kilo for the garbage that you give them — a system prevalent in many cities across the US and a huge money-minting business in Frankfurt, Germany.
The idea was generated by an NGO, formed by a group of retired officers of a leading corporate house, who approached the AMC with an action plan last week. Residents would be provided with three specially-designed containers for segregation of waste — as paper, plastic and organic waste. The agency would collect the segregated waste from your home and pay you for the collection.
"Garbage primarily does not interest us much, but if there is an incentive tagged with it, I think every Amdavadi household will co-operate. We have asked an NGO to first choose a particular area after conducting a detailed survey. They would proceed with the collection on an experimental basis. If this experiment succeeds, we would implement it across the city. I know of a company in Frankfurt that has a turnover of 4 million euros out of garbage business," says municipal commissioner IP Gautam.
The agency will sell the waste to other agencies for recycling. For instance, paper and plastic waste will be sold to recycling companies, organic kitchen waste to organic manure manufacturing firms, while other garbage products can be sold to steam turbine captive power plants that burn waste to generate electricity.
The earlier system of door-to-door garbage collection, where AMC paid private agencies Rs 10 per household until recently, is said to be fraught with several loopholes.
