The government has renewed its focus on institutes of higher education in the country but a great deal of work still needs to be done, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi today said.

Laying the foundation stone for the Rs 1000 crore IIT campus in Medak district, she said there is an urgent need to spread higher education among the deprived sections of the society. "The UPA government has undertaken the process of renewing institutes of higher education in the country," Gandhi said.

"We still have a great deal of work to do," she said adding that 30 new central universities, 8 IITs, 7 IIMs 5 IISCs, 21 IIITs and 10 NITs would be set up across the country in the next three years. The IIT in Medak is temporarily running from an old ordnance factory with a first batch intake of 111 students in three engineering streams.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy, Union Minister for State for HRD Daggubati Purandheswari and State Technical Education Minister R Chengareddy were present on the occasion.
