Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu today said the Congress had given importance to women and enacted laws to ensure that they get their due in every sphere of life.
He was addressing the HP Mahila Congress meeting held under the chairmanship of state Mahila Congress president Susheela Negi. All-India Mahila Congress secretary and Himachal in-charge Talat Aziz also addressed the meeting.
“Women are integral part of society and they are taking part in all activities, credit for which goes to Congress governments at the Centre and the state,” he said. It was due to the thinking of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi which ensured 50 per cent reservation for women in Panchayati Raj Institutions.
He said it was this legislation which laid the foundation for increased participation of women in politics.
Addressing party workers, Susheela said she would continue to work towards strengthening the party organisation. She said she would visit all districts and make efforts to strengthen the women wing after consultations with women and senior party leaders.
She said the Congress had got major success in Panchayati Raj Institutions elections as over 80 per cent candidates affiliated with the party had won in these elections.
“More than 60 per cent women candidates affiliated with the party had also contested and won,” she said, adding that she would ensure adequate representation to women in the party organisation.
HPCC general secretary Harbhajan Singh Bhajji said the Congress had always provided adequate representation to women and ensured rights to women. Talat Aziz said the party had always fought for the rights of women and would continue to do so in the future.
