In a freak incident, a senior citizen's leg got stuck in the commode of the toilet of a long-distance Konkan Railway (KR) train for hours on Friday.
Ghatkopar resident Rabiyabi Sheikh (65) was travelling with her husband Kasam Sheikh in S-10 coach of the 10111 Dn Konkan Kanya Express from Mumbai to Karmali. A KR official said, "The senior citizen had gone to the washroom at 4am. While coming out of the washroom between Khed and Chiplun, she tried opening the door but lost her balance and slipped. Eventually, her leg got stuck in the Indian style commode."
When she cried for help, her husband, who was waiting outside the washroom, asked co-passengers to help open the door. Since the lady was immobile on the floor of the toilet, the door too could not be opened.
In order to rescue the lady on priority, the door of the washroom was dismantled with the help of railway staff. Though the train ticket examiner (TTE), coach attendant and co-passengers tried their level best to pull her up, it could not be done even by dismantling the door. The official said, "All means were tried even after the train passed Chiplun, but in vain."
By the time the train reached Ratnagiri, the regional railway manager B B Nikam along with doctors and officers as well as railway staff attended to the lady in distress, but she could not be pulled out.
Konkan Railway finally decided to detach the coach and accommodate passengers of that coach into another coach. The officials also decided to meticulously cut the Indian-style commode with a gas cutter, in such a manner that the woman wouldn't get hurt.
Finally, after 10 hours, the lady was rescued safely at around 12.30 pm. The spokesperson said, "She had a swollen leg and was taken to the civil hospital in Ratnagiri as a preventive measure and for further attention."
A KR official said, "It was difficult because the leg got firmly stuck as the commode's circumference was almost the size of her leg. We had to cut the metal very carefully without causing any physical harm to her."
