BATHINDA:

The court of additional district and sessions judge on Tuesday sentenced a woman and her paramour to 40 years rigorous imprisonment for killing her husband and two children by administering them poison-laced food.

Considering it a rare case, wherein a woman murdered her husband and minor children in cold blood to keep her illicit relationship, the court awarded the two accused separate punishment, saying they will be released after undergoing 40-year rigorous imprisonment.

According to investigating officer Dalbir Singh, the crime was committed at Jagaram Tirath village of Bathinda on July 21, 2005, when Manpreet Kaur, 27, desperate to break all ties with her husband Surjit Singh and two children — eight-year-old Narinder Pal and two-year-old Anmol — fed them pesticide to live "happily ever after" with Binder Kumar of Mansa.

While Surjit succumbed the same day, the kids died two days later. Initially, none suspected Manpreet of murder, thinking diarrhoea claimed Surjit. However, when the condition of children continued to deteriorate, their uncle rushed them to hospital in Mansa two days later. However, while breathed his last on way to the hospital, the other succumbed soon after.

Police investigations revealed that Manpreet wanted to marry Binder and considered her children an obstacle in this alliance. She plotted their elimination along with Binder and succeeded in it. The duo, though, was booked for murder under sections 302 and 201 (destroying evidence) of IPC.
