MUMBAI: The Sion police on Saturday arrested Kausar Begam, a 32-year-old woman from Bangalore, for allegedly marrying and divorcing 10 Mumbai
businessmen in 18 years, and blackmailing and threatening them. Her parents — father Iqbal Pasha and mother Gulnaz — who supported her in duping her husbands of lakhs of rupees, were also arrested.

The matter came to light when a 35-year-old exporter from Powai, Sayyed Ahmed, complained to the Sion police that his wife and her parents had been blackmailing him for two years.

It was learnt that the trio would visit star hotels in and target businessmen. Kausar Begam would befriend them and put up a marriage plan. After marrying the man, she would leave his house with valuables and lodge dowry complaint against him and in-laws. Ahmed's lawyer, Ganesh Iyer, told TOI, 'He was Begam's ninth husband. They got married in 2006, and 15 days into the marriage she left his house along with gold and diamond ornaments that were given to her by Ahmed's family. She went to her parents' home in Bangalore without informing him."

She and her parents lodged a complaint with the Sion police, claiming that his family was harassing her for dowry. They also claimed his family had taken Rs 15 lakh from her, and demanded the money back. The current husband was a Dubai-based doctor.

EXTRA --- “She would lure a man into marriage, live with him for some time, and then flee with his valuables. If he demanded his things back, she would threaten to file a dowry case,” said sub-inspector Vilas Shelar, of Sion police.

Salma was arrested when her fourth husband, Sayyed Hasham, an import-export dealer, filed a complaint.

On receiving a proposal for Salma, Hasham went to Bangalore. “Her father Iqbal Passha told me he did not have much money for ceremonies. I paid all the expenses, and the marriage took place on June 11, 2007,” said Hasham.

Two days later, however, Passha visited Hasham’s place at Powai and he and Salma allegedly fled with belongings worth Rs 10 lakh. When Hasham approached them in Bangalore, Salma said she was not interested in Mumbai and he should shift to Bangalore. When he didn’t agree, she demanded Rs 20 lakh as divorce settlement, or said she would file a dowry case. Hasham then filed a case.

“Marriage was just a medium for Salma and her family to make money. Her family have a bungalow worth Rs 2 crore. Where did the money come from? She even got married to a Hyderabad nawab and he shelled out Rs 50 lakh when she threatened to lodge a complaint against his family,” claimed Hasham. “We arrested Salma, her father and mother from Bangalore, and are looking for an agent named Rehmat Ulla,” said Shelar.
