FEROZEPUR: Finally waking up to her rights, a woman took the legal route to demand compensation of Rs 5 lakh from the health deprtment for a failed sterilisation operation. She had been pleading her case for the past 11 years but did not get any relief. According to information, Naseeb Kaur, wife of Jerman Singh of Bhai ka Wada village under this district, had undergone the operation in 1993. Though the doctors told her that the operation was successful, she became pregnant after 3 years of her operation.

"I felt the necessity of undergoing the operation because we were financially not sound enough to bear any more children. But all hopes were shattered after the failure of operation and birth of a baby girl in 1996," said Naseeb. The couple approached the local civil hospital and demanded compensation on account of unwanted pregnancy but the health department did not care to respond. They then decided to take up the matter to the court. In their complaint, the couple prayed for compensation for the mental and physical agony and financial loss suffered by them on account of unwanted pregnancy.
