Hoshiarpur June 24:

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Amarinder Singh said that winning ability will be the only criterion for finalising the party candidates for the forthcoming Assembly elections in the State.

He said that that the party had never said that all the sitting MLAs will be fielded in the next elections. “Choosing a candidate is the prerogative of the AICC president Sonia Gandhi only,” he said after a meeting with the party workers.

The PCC president said that the Congress has a proper system of short listing the candidates and the PCC recommends high command and the final decision is taken by Gandhi. He said today’s visit was not connected in any way to the process of screening candidates. He was here to listen to the problems of the party workers from the Assembly segments of Hoshiarpur, Tanda, Dasuya and Mukerian. He pointed out that since it would not be possible for each and every Congress worker to come to Chandigarh and meet him there, he has been visiting them personally at their respective places.

Singh also questioned the misuse of the funds by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in his archaic Sangat Darshan programmes. He said that even the Comptroller and Auditor General of India had questioned the unplanned manner in which the precious State resources were being squandered away. Asked about his stand on clemency to Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, he reiterated that he should get clemency as he has been in the jail for last 10 years and for the eight years in death row. He pointed out one judge had dissented while awarding him the capital punishment. Meanwhile, a few days back State party in charge Gulchain Singh Charak had backed the decision of the Centre on Bhullar’s death sentence.
