US state dept hails Indian clerics’ fatwa against Islamic St

The United States has welcomed a “fatwa” issued by over 1,000 Indian Muslim clerics against IS terming the actions of the dreaded terror group as “un-Islamic and inhuman.” “We welcome reports that Muslim community leaders and clerics in India have condemned IS (Islamic State),” said State Department spokesperson Helaena White.
Such a message coming from Muslims of India, which has the second largest Muslim population of the world, is considered by the US a key message against IS which in recent months has made deep inroads not only in the Middle-East but also expanding its influence in South Asia.
“We value efforts to counter IS’s message, particularly raising awareness of the detrimental effects IS’s recruitment efforts have on youth,” White said yesterday.“We welcome statements from religious and political leaders around the world denouncing IS and exposing its un-Islamic nature, and encourage further sustained outreach to vulnerable populations,” White added.
Over 1,050 Indian Muslim scholars and clerics have issued the fatwa against the IS, saying that its views were “un-Islamic and inhuman.” The edict was issued by a leading Mumbai-based cleric, Mohammed Manzar Hasan Ashrafi Misbahi, and has been signed by the leaders of all the main mosques in India, which has the world's third-largest Muslim population.
Muslim clerics across India will speak to their followers after Friday prayers, explaining the edict and why it is important to denounce the Islamic State, said Abdul Rehman Anjaria, president of the Islamic Defense Cyber Cell.
