UP police denies firing during farmers’ agitation


Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh police today claimed that police did not open fire at protesting farmers in Aligarh and that the three civilian protesters were killed when the security personnel acted in self defence.

"As per the reports available with us, none of the deaths among the public was due to police firing," IG, Crime, A P Maheshwari told reporters here.

"Dharmendra (30), Prashant (15) and Mohit (14) from among the public and a platoon commander of the PAC have been killed in Aligarh besides injuries to ten policemen and 12 locals," Maheshwari said, claiming that an SLR of an RAF personnel was also looted.

Giving an account of the sequence of events on August 14, Maheswari said following the arrest of BKU district president Ram Babu Kateria in connection with some case, the farmers of three villages went on a rampage and indulged in firing and brick batting resulting in the killing of Subedar Brijendra Singh, platoon commander of the PAC, besides injuries to ten other policemen.

Maheshwari said the agitating farmers also damaged government vehicles and some dumpers.

Police and PAC had to use force in self defence and lobbed tear gas shells and in the subsequent action three people from among the public were killed and 12 injured, of which one has been rushed to Delhi while others were admitted to J N Medical College, she said.

Protesting the developments in Aligarh, the farmers in Mathura also damaged vehicles in Naujheel police station area, Maheshwari said, adding cases have been registered in both the districts.

Senior police officials including the ADG, Law and Order, Brij Lal have rushed to Aligarh and 18 additional companies of the PAC has been deployed in the affected areas. DG, PAC, R K Tewari is also camping in the district since yesterday.

To a question, the IG said some sporadic incidents did take place today but the situation was under control.

The government has already ordered a judicial inquiry and shifted senior officers of the district.

The farmers of Jikarpur had been agitating for higher compensation for the land acquired for the Yamuna Expressway project since July 28.
