Union Minister Smriti Irani Spars With Journalist on Twitter

New Delhi: Union minister Smriti Irani's very public argument with a journalist kept Twitter agog today. The exchange started over a news report, which rapidly proceeded to encompass freedom of speech -- with the responses from the Twitterati raising the temperature.

The report, which appeared in the Economic Times, claimed that the minister had recommended over 5,000 admissions in Kendriya Vidyalaya schools in the current academic year - a more than four-fold increase from her predecessors.

In an angry post, the minister responded:

Then she added:

The reporter, Anubhuti Vishnoi, responded, saying that with utmost respect to the minister, she had been requesting for the ministry's view and version since Friday, but none had come.

Ms Irani shot back:
@anubhutivishnoi 2 line humari aur baaki ka version aapka. N by d way respect aap na bhi kare to koi farak nai padta.

The minister further tweeted:

The social media jumped in with a mix of anger, irritation, irreverence and amusement, sometimes even drawing a rejoinder from the minister.

In response to a comment from another journalist, the minister shot back:
