TWO MINORS AMONG FOUR FROM CITY KILLED IN NAINA DEVI STAMPEDE

Ludhiana August 5:
The stampede at the Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh left deep scars on the families based in Ludhiana. The authorities have identified four city-based persons till now among the 145 who died in the stampede.
These include three members of a family of Guru Angad Dev colony. A pall of gloom descended in the areas when the bodies of the victims were brought to their homes and later cremated. The three deceased include a woman and her two minor children. They have been identified as Renu (28), her son Gurpartap Singh (9) and daughter Kiran (7). Renu had gone to the Naina Devi temple along with her husband Gurdeep Singh, who deals in sanitary wears.
Gurdeep, who saw his family die, was inconsolable. His sister Rekha said the family was regularly visiting the temple for the past 10 years. “On Sunday afternoon, my brother called to inform us of the tragedy,” Rekha said. The city also lost a local boy, Ajay Kumar (17), a resident of Shivpuri, in the stampede, reportedly triggered by a landslide rumour.
Ajay Kumar, along with his elder brother Vikram, had gone to the temple with around 35 maternal relatives from Haryana. Twelve of their relatives also died in the stampede. “We were standing in a queue when the stampede started suddenly. The railing on the slope also broke . Ajay’s neck was stuck in the railing and he died on the spot.” A student of Class X, Ajay’s body was cremated in the noon.
