JALANDHAR: Two youths were sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court here for rape and murder of a minor daughter of a head constable of Punjab Police on May 4, 2005 at Dheena village.

The court of additional sessions judge BK Mehta on Monday sentenced the accused, Daljit Singh and Rakesh Kumar, to life imprisonment separately, under all the four sections of IPC - 302, 376, 460 and 394 - for which they were tried.

The court held that they would undergo the sentence simultaneously besides paying a fine of Rs 10,000 for each offence, failing which they would have to undergo imprisonment for another three years. According to prosecution, the accused, residents of the same village, barged into the house of head constable Baldev Singh at Dheena near Jalandhar on the evening of May 4, 2005, with the intention of robbery, while he and his wife were away and the victim was alone at home.

They looted valuables, raped and murdered their 16-year-old daughter. According to police sources, it had been proved in the medical report of the deceased that she was raped by the accused.

"When we returned home at around 9 pm, we found our daughter dead and the articles in the house scattered all around," Baldev told TOI, while adding "she was a very intelligent girl and had appeared in the 10th standard examination. Her killing changed our life forever."

He said they were in fact preparing to celebrate her birthday which was on the next day of the happening. The accused had fled from the village after committing the crime but was later apprehended by the police.
