AN IDENTICAL twin is thought to have died while lying in bed next to her sister.

Medics could not explain what caused the death of Ambar Bashid, who was born with sister Ammara at Tameside Hospital on 3 March last year. The babies were born by Caesarean section and, although they weighed less than 5lbs each, were in good health.

They stayed in hospital for just over a week before parents Salema Khatun and Abdul Bashid were allowed to take them home to Meadow Street, Hyde.

An inquest heard how Ambar and Ammara were developing well and had been signed off by the midwife and health visitor.

But on 20 April, believing them to be asleep on her bed, Salema lay down beside her children. When she woke a few minutes later she noticed Ambar was not moving and had blood coming from her nose.

Following the operator’s instructions, Salema tried to breathe for her baby until the ambulance arrived. She was taken to Tameside Hospital where doctors tried to resuscitate her but was pronounced dead around an hour later.

Pathologist Melanie Newbould carried out a post-mortem but could not find anything wrong and a verdict of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome was recorded. SIDS — the sudden and unexplained death of an apparently healthy infant — is also known as cot death.

Coroner John Pollard said: "I rather suspect she was beyond recovery before she even went to hospital.

"It’s really saying everything else is ruled out but this baby almost certainly died of natural causes."

Verdict: Sudden infant death syndrome
